Many thanks to all those who turned up on Sunday. It really is amazing how much muck was pulled out.

Also a heartfelt thanks to Libby for providing us all with refreshments. I don’t know about Alan but I was freezing out there in the middle and that coffee was just the thing to stop hypothermia setting in.

    Thanks,

    J

    Removal of rogue rodents.

When dealing with rodents I have tried various methods. The traditional monach trap is very good when baited with apple although the really stupid ones struggle to work out where the entrance is and the really clever ones seem to learn not to go in over time. You can read about Monach traps here:

    https://trapman.co.uk/monarch-self-resetting-multi-live-catch-humane-rat-trap.htm

Do not buy the Olympa ones off Amazon. They are utter rubbish. A tree-rat just rips them apart. The ones made by the Big Cheese Company are better but as supplied the spring can pop off the trap door releasing all captives. Also, there is a gap between the arch of the cage and the trap-door surround big enough for a treerat to escape. However, block that gap with some suitable wire, Araldite the spring to the trap-door and wire the other end of the spring to the cage wall and the Big Cheese Company Monach style trap is excellent. It is a good guage of wire and finished well with no sharp edges – not something you want when dealing with rodents.

For persistent infestations I found the Victor M205 rat traps to be excellent. You can get a box of 12 for around £30. Be aware there are 2 very similar models: the M205 and the M205R. You need the M205 as it has a stronger spring. The M205R is useless so check the specification very carefully before buying. The M205 requires no bait, just place it where you see their runs / droppings and wait for the snap!

I got the M205 traps from here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CAO1RH4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

BEWARE: the pack of 10 is the weaker M205R. The pack of 12 if the M205, or was when I bought them.

The Big Cheese Company multi-catch live trap is here but remember it will require modification before use: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004MHTAMG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For modifying the above trap but also as glis-proofing to prevent glis glis or other rodents such as the gliss gliss entering the house in the first place I have found this wire from Wickes to be very good: https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-13mm-Garden-Cage+Aviary-Wire-Mesh-Galvanised—900mm-x-6m/p/187732

    LEGAL DISCLAIMER

The gliss gliss should not be confused with the glis glis or edible dormouse. Under European law the glis glis is a protected species and can only be dispatched by a registered agent. Also, as an invasive species the glis glis cannot be re-released into the countryside in the UK. Martin Holman down by Butlers Cross can deal with all things related to glis glis.

The gliss gliss on the other hand is a local colloquialism for the Buckinghamshire tree-rat. This prolific rodent is an endemic menace, chewing through electricity cables and roof rafters with wild abandon. The name is derived from the crackling noise it makes as it gently fries having chewed through your ring-main.

    Interesting article here:

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jun/27/welsh-village-residents-dig-15-miles-trenches-faster-wifi-michaelston-y-fedw

You could probably route it through the woods quite easily if you could find the land owners. Chequer’s land would take you across Lodge Hill and Fugsden Wood, that just leaves the land owner of High Scrubs.

    Hi Lorraine,

Getting everyone together is tricky. Plus, I still have an awful lot of work to do on my house so I don’t like to lose weekends when I can get a good solid day in. I figure if I do a bit at a time when I fancy a break from DIY then it’ll get done in the end. I am struggling a bit on time this week, maybe next week I can do some more one evening. Libby let me dump some stuff in her garden and said she’d help too so the will is there. If people agree a date I’ll try and pop up. Doing it while the water level is low seems a bonus too.

In hindsight I should have worn safety specs or goggles, together with rubber gloves. You never know with a pond like that if Wials disease or similar is present, especially with ducks and so forth in it; I could do without bird flu!

    Any help most definitely welcome.

    J

PS. I don’t like posting details on a public forum but Libby or Vanessa know where I am if need be.

Odd advice: I’d have thought with the current water situation a regularly cleaned bird-bath n a garden would be a far safer bet than some shared puddle or pond. I could do with something to wipe out the collar dove / pigeon population but I’d hate to lose any finches from the garden.

I know a decent guy. He charges £200 per day plus materials. I won’t put his number on a public forum but if you e-mail I’ll pass on Nigel’s number.

Might not be Luton. Heathrow comes over us too. Think there are others too. Busy spot! I’ve seen a map somewhere with all the flightpaths on but cannot remember where. You can see the planes here: https://www.flightradar24.com/51.73,-0.69/11

No, nor is the new road the railway people built down to staggered junction with Rocky Lane. That would make sense as I think it was built in the late 1880s or early 1890s. The new road is there in the 1896 map. I have the maps with the deeds from 1928 and your house is not on there; your side of the road just says Rothschild. Our house was built in 1928 from plot 407. Moonrising was called Hill View and owned by Kingham and then Oliffe. Not sure when Tollington moved in. Jack Baker was already living at the back in Highfields although the land showed as John Christian Baker.

1896: http://maps.nls.uk/view/101168495 (can see the new road on this one)
1896: http://maps.nls.uk/view/101168498 (clearer. Cannot see the Old Ford Cottages though?)
    1899: http://maps.nls.uk/view/104182859
1900: http://maps.nls.uk/view/101449855 (you can see the the Fox (interestingly in my 1928 map for the deeds it is called the Bugle Horn) and the Black horse but nothing down our side of the hill after the Old Ford cottages.)
1945: http://maps.nls.uk/view/74466958 (now clearly Dunsmore and not Scrubwood)
1960: http://maps.nls.uk/view/93505998 (your house is clearly shown here)
    1961: http://maps.nls.uk/view/91577128

Since Dave decided to retire I use Stoke Mandeville Autocentre (SMA). They’re just before the hospital A&E turning. They’re honest, reasonable and do good work.

Looks like tomorrow afternoon after 1pm is the most likely start time.
